How can I keep track of the camp schedule?
As Camp approaches in late May or early June, look for the overview, with weekly calendar themes, of the specific summer program plan, so you might know and understand the rhythm of summer camp days. Look for the generalized daily plan to be posted at Camp so you know where to find your camper if you need to arrive, or do arrive earlier, or if you are wondering about the times of lunch, snack, or swimming.
Will my child become overheated outside in the summer heat?
Florida is often humid in the summer. We alternate busy activities with cool-down periods, noisy with quiet times. The children adapt beautifully, as generations before them, to the heat and sometimes predictable summer rain. Also all staff members are conscientious of their camper's water intake and sunscreen application throughout the day.
How should I prepare my child's lunch and clothing for a typical camp day?
Children bring their lunch and snacks in an industrial type of lunch "box". We do have several raccoon friends that love to open and drag away cloth and paper bag lunches, so we highly recommend against these types of lunch containers. Each camper should also bring a refillable water bottle, not a plastic throw away water bottle. Additional snacks, water and energy drinks are provided during the day. Sturdy sneakers, socks, shorts, and t-shirt are attire of the day. Swimming is part of our spring and summer program, so please send a bathing suit, towel, water shoes, and a complete change of clothing in their camp bag (available at the camp store)! Flip flops are not allowed during other camp activities, with the exception of swimming, due to the possibility of injury. A camp experience is not necessarily clean; expect clothes to be well worn and to contain soil, sand, and water! Please provide the type of sun block you are most comfortable with, hat, and any specific insect repellent which seems to work best for you child. Label all things from home with your child's name using a permanent marker.
What happens in the event of a medical problem an injury?
In the unlikely event of an accident, illness, or injury, you will be notified immediately by telephone. In the event of a serious injury, paramedics will take your child to the nearest hospital as which you will be notified as soon as the injury is reported. In this event, and as possible, a camp staff member will ride in the ambulance with your child. All staff members are trained in CPR, and head staff members are also trained in First Aid. If your child is on a specific medication, please be sure to send that medication to camp if it is to be given throughout the day. In these cases you must sign permission for the on-site Director to give the medication (on enrollment information). We cannot administer over-the-counter medications, unless accompanied by a physician's prescription. We will give prescription medications only from pharmacy containers appropriately labeled with your child's name, pharmacy, physician's name, dosage, date, and type of medication. See the on-site Director should this need arise.
What is the staff to camper ratio? And are they background checked?
Camp Live Oak maintains a 5 to 1 ratio as per the American Camping Association standards. All staff members, including office staff is locally and nationally background checked.
What if my child loses something? Is there a Lost and Found?
Camp would not be complete without a lost and found box. Each site has a specific location for these boxes. Site directors will put found items on display each week and will be discarded at the end of each session if not claimed. It is the responsibility of the camper to keep track of all items.
What if I need to drop my son or daughter off early or pick them up late and I'm not registered for AM/PM care?
We will be happy to take care of your child during any of these times. Parents will need to sign their child in and out and will be charged an hourly rate. You will receive an invoice for the amount due at the end of each week.
My child doesn't know how to swim that well, do you provide swimming lessons?
Camp Live Oak does not provide swim lessons. We do have certified lifeguards that perform weekly swim tests to each camper to record their swimming abilities. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of all our campers and extra supervision is given to those who are not strong swimmers.
