Camp Live Oak 2010
Ages 5 to 13
Before and After Camp care is available for parents who need a longer camp day. Please contact the Camp Director with your needs and include this information on the Registration Form when you enroll your child for this additional camp feature. A car pool list is maintained to assist parents with transportation.
Camp Live Oak operates a ten week summer program which includes time blocks of:
- A four week session (optional Photo Safari)
- A second four week session (Optional Sleep-over)
- A one week Ocean Quest Camp
- A one week Adventure Camp
An additional fee is charged for Optional Programs.
Camp's first session begins in June as school ends and runs through the week school begins in August. Children are in age-appropriate groupings. Below is our 2010 summer program. We will be continually updating this section so please check back with us to see what exciting adventures we have added! Please note that programming is subject to change.
Session 1: ECO-QUEST – Explore Florida’s Fascinating Ecosystems
An in-depth, hands-on look into our exciting ecosystems. Through the eyes of a wildlife biologist learn to identify the plant and animal species in each of these ecosystems. Look into the adaptations that allow them to succeed in their habitats and the current threats.
Week 1 – Mangrove Ecology – Explore the Estuary
- What makes these trees so important, what role do they play, mangrove ID.
- Start a mangrove nursery with the park
- Canoe in the estuary / water testing and water quality
Week 2 – Hardwood Hammock – How did the Native Floridians survive in this unique habitat?
- Animal tracking
- Medicinal plants
- Invasive species, what are they, why are they a problem, service project with the park to clean an area of invasive species.
Week 3 – The Everglades – The only place like it on Earth!
- Trip to the Everglades, airboat and slogging!
- The KLOE system and how the everglades works
- Catching critters and identifying these aquatic insects
- Create an awareness campaign/ poster/ skit to educate campers about the importance of protecting the Everglades
Week 4 – Coral Reefs – Treasure Troves of Biodiversity
- Learn about these highly productive environments, their important role in the ocean ecosystem and the current threats they face.
Session 2: ECO Citizens Unite! – Learn how to be an earth minded citizen of our planet earth community.
Week 1 – Reduce Reuse Recycle – Learn how worms can help us reduce our kitchen waste.
- Create your own worm composting bin!
- What is your eco footprint
- Camp service- recycling signs for park
- Learn about the garbage gyre in the Pacific Ocean and the importance of keeping our oceans clean!
Week 2 – Renewable Energy – Build your own wind turbine!
- What is renewable energy
- Contact FPL to see what education programs they might have.
- How can we conserve energy in our homes
Week 3 – The Future of Food – Sustainable Agriculture, How does your garden grow?
- Trip to a local farm.
- Teach the kids to container garden
- Pollination and beneficial insects, catch and release insects
Week 4 – Sustainable Solutions – Greening our homes and our communities.
- Global Climate Change, what does it mean to us – CO2 experiment
