Katie Danks is our Science Instructor and Lifeguard at Birch State Park. This is Katie’s first summer with Camp Live Oak. Her passions are environmental education, wildlife rehabilitation and outdoor exploration! She graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and a Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies in December 2019. Go Eagles!
Katie’s environmental education career began her sophomore year of college when she became a Environmental Educator for FGCU’s “Wings of Hope” program, where they were able to educate 4th and 5th graders about Florida’s unique ecosystems and wildlife at a 300 acre preserve.
After “Wings of Hope” she began working at Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, located in the City of Fort Myers, as their Director of Operations for two and a half years and gained extensive mentoring and educational development on natural environments and its inhabitants.
Katie currently works with “Build a Field Trip” in Fort Lauderdale as an Environmental Educator Instructor, facilitating outdoor exploration excursions to teach students from elementary to high school about our local habitats and wildlife. She is also a member of the Florida Association of Environmental Professionals and the League of Environmental Educators in Florida and is a Project WILD Facilitator for the FWC.
“I love all things nature and my goal is to connect as many people, no matter their age or background to nature. As Albert Einstein said,’Look deep into Nature, and you will understand everything better.'”
We are excited to welcome Katie to our Camp Live Oak team this year! Katie is First Aid/CPR certified and an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard.
