From Fishing to Kayaking, Get Kids Comfortable with Water

At Camp Live Oak, the caring and well-trained staff knows the importance of water safety and it begins  with helping children learn to be confident and comfortable in and around water. At Camp Live Oak, swimming is one of the camper’s favorite water activities which also include fishing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and surfing. There is even a special scuba diving camp for children aged 8 to 13 who are intermediate swimmers. Let’s explore all the water sports offered at Camp Live Oak this summer.

Swimming

As one of the favorite activities, swimming at Camp Live Oak allows campers at Birch State Park opportunities to swim in the Atlantic’s beautiful blue waters while those at Oleta River Park can enjoy the calm seas of Biscayne Bay. A cool and enjoyable time, swimming give campers time to relax and refresh with friends in a safe environment with Camp Live Oak certified lifeguards at each location. In addition, campers at Birch State Park have the added supervision of a certified Fort Lauderdale lifeguard as well.

Surfing

Campers can learn to ride the waves on BZ soft foam boards at Ft. Lauderdale beach, the ideal location for beginners as well as experienced surfers. Camp Live Oak’s trained staff will work with kids teaching the basics of surfing as well as safety procedures while they learn to surf the waves. As with all water activities, Camp Live Oak certified lifeguards are on hand to ensure camper safety.

Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding is another popular sport at Camp Live Oak, offered all summer long at each location. Campers will learn how to paddle board and stay safe on the water while effortlessly skimming along the water. Paddle boarding is perfect for flat water days at the beach, and helps kids develop balance, focus, gross motor skills, and concentration. While paddle boarding, the campers wear personal floatation devices for safety while they explore Florida’s marine life – fish, turtles, and more. Paddle boards are available for use during swim time with Camp Live Oak staff on hand to teach even inexperienced riders the basics.

Canoeing and Kayaking

Camp Live Oak campers also enjoy kayaking and canoeing. Campers learn paddling techniques, kayak/canoe handling, and safety procedures from Camp Live Oak’s canoeing staff (certified level I) before embarking on their adventures exploring the waters of South Florida. Canoeing and kayaking is offered at spring, summer, and winter camps, and allows kids opportunities to see gray herons, turtles, dragonflies, fish, and more up close and personal. At the Birch State Park location, campers will paddle amid colorful flora and native wildlife, visit Camp Live Oak’s famous island, and maneuver through mangrove waterways.

Fishing

Fishing is another favorite among the water sports at Camp Live Oak – affording campers the opportunity reel in a big one for their own “fish story.” Campers follow catch and release guidelines, fishing from the Oleta River State Park or on the intracoastal waters of Birch State Park. The staff teaches campers how to tie fishing knots, bait a rod, cast, and reel in a fish.

This has been the first camp ever that my son didn’t complain about going in the morning, but he did tell me about the friends he made and the things he did. We love this camp!
