2023 – 2024 Winter Camp Program

Tuesday, December 26th – National Candy Cane Day – Challenging games played with Candy Canes will have campers giggling and laughing seeing who can catch the most candy canes, fishing in a bucket, which team can complete the adventure through Camp Candy Forest! The inquisitive minds will hypothesize and come up with tests to find out what solutions and the reactions are needed to dissolve sugar fastest. Campers will take their poles, relax at the water while they fish the intracoastal waters and create a sweet candy themed art piece to take home!

Wednesday, December 27th – How are Crystals and Campers Alike? – Each camper is unique just as snowflakes are all unique, snowflakes are crystals!  With morning ice-breakers we will learn about each camper’s uniqueness before campers become crystallographers; learning about crystals, the different structures, how they form and why they are important in technology. We will create beautiful paper crystals in art and spend time canoeing on Long Lake, campers will explore the waters looking for turtles, fish, and flowers.  Older campers will learn how to make their canoes dance on water, then race each other back from the island.

Thursday, December 28th – Investigative Beachcombing and Beads! – Sandman instead of snowmen, campers will work together to build their Sandman, complete with a carrot nose, scarves and items collected on the beach on an investigative beach hike and scavenger hunt. Campers will explore the beach as Physical Oceanographers, observing the tidal zones, the dunes and waves, collecting items to upcycle in their sandman building activity and in art.  Beads have been used in many cultures to tell stories, to mark occasions and to create friendships.  We continue this tradition by teaching campers to braid bracelets, with beads they have made, found, traded for, including shells, stones or feathers found on the beach hike.

Friday, December 29th – Winter Wildlife Exploration – Winter here in Florida is not so extreme but in other parts of the world what do the wildlife do when snow covers the ground?  As Zoologists, campers will learn about hibernation, adaptation and survival in the arctic region and compare them to what we will see at the park on a wildlife watching hike.  Archery is a sport/ skill that has been around for hundreds of years, campers will learn the history of archery in the Olympics as they practice proper techniques as they aim for the bulls eye!

Week Two – Welcome to an unforgettable 4 – Day adventure at Camp Live Oak, where young explorers transform into budding entomologists, primitive artists, skilled canoe racers, and avid anglers and archers. Each day is a thrilling journey, filled with hands-on activities and immersive experiences that foster a deep connection with nature.

Tuesday, January 2 – Entomology Extravaganza– Embark on a captivating exploration of the miniature world as campers delve into the life of insects. Equipped with magnifying glasses and field guides, they’ll uncover the secrets of butterflies, beetles, and bees. Engaging workshops and nature walks led by experienced entomologists will unveil the fascinating behaviors and habitats of these incredible creatures. Some fish eat insects, and campers will test the waters to see if the fish will eat a fly more than shrimp.

Wednesday, January 3 – Primitive Artistry, Fossil Hunt and Archery – Unleash the inner artist as campers’ step back in time to discover the primitive art of petroglyphs as they create their own rock art. Campers become Paleontologists for the day, digging in the dirt to uncover fossil remains. Take aim, campers will learn the sport of archery as they challenge themselves to improve their techniques shooting at fun targets.

Thursday, January 4 – Let’s take a Long Look and Long Lake! – Limnologists are what campers will become today as we take a look at Long Lake, studying it from the shore and from canoes, observing the plants, animals and insects that live at the lake.  Teamwork, strategy, and a splash of friendly rivalry make this day at the lake an unforgettable highlight of the camp experience. To remember the day, campers will paint a landscape painting of the lake or an aspect of their time by the water in water colors.

Friday, January 5 – Snowbird Olympics! –Campers will learn about sportsmanship and snowbirds!  Teamwork and focus will be needed as they are challenged in a camp wide Olympic style games that will have them cheering and laughing.  What’s a snowbird?  As Ornithologists, campers will learn about migration paths and take a hike to observe the different birds in the different ecosystems of the park. Upcycling household materials, campers will make a birdfeeder to take home.

This has been the first camp ever that my son didn’t complain about going in the morning, but he did tell me about the friends he made and the things he did. We love this camp!
